About Dr. Dowdy

Seeking support can feel overwhelming, especially when you have been carrying pain quietly for a long time. Dr. Dowdy provides a steady, respectful therapeutic space where healing is not rushed and every part of your story can be explored with compassion and care.

Hello, I’m Dr. Orlando Dowdy

Licensed Therapist

I am a psychotherapist and pastoral counselor serving clients in Durham, NC through Dowdy Psychotherapy. My work is rooted in the belief that healing happens when people are met without judgment, listened to with intention, and supported without pressure to quickly “fix” what is hurting. Creating a therapeutic environment that is non-judgmental, supportive, safe, nurturing, and empathic.

I offer care that is clinically informed, evidence-based, culturally responsive, and spiritually aware when that is meaningful to the client. I understand that emotional wounds, psychological burdens, and spiritual questions often overlap. In this space, you do not have to separate those parts of yourself.

My therapeutic approach integrates trauma-informed psychotherapy, emotional regulation, behavioral strategies, narrative exploration, and attention to the mind-body connection. I also use integrative orientation that includes psychodynamic therapy, AEDP, CBT, mindfulness-related work, and other modalities tailored to the needs of the individual.

This work is deeply personal to me. My journey has been shaped by ministry leadership, service in high-pressure environments, and walking alongside people in crisis, grief, and transformation. I am a retired military officer, a former law enforcement officer, and a pastor with decades of ministerial experience, which aligns closely with the populations he now serves.

This is not simply my profession. It is my calling.

My Approach & Values

I believe healing happens when people are:

  • Seen without judgment
  • Heard without interruption
  • Supported without being rushed to “fix”

In our work together, I provide a space that is:

  • Safe, confidential, and grounded
  • Clinically informed and evidence-based
  • Spiritually aware, when desired
  • Culturally responsive and deeply respectful

I do not rush your process. I walk with you through it.

My approach integrates:

  • Trauma-informed psychotherapy
  • Neuroscience and the mind-body connection
  • Emotional regulation and behavioral strategies
  • Narrative and meaning-making work
